Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know about BH II Toastmasters before you walk through the door.

Visiting and joining

Can I attend a meeting as a guest?

Yes. Guests are always welcome — no registration needed, no pressure to speak. Just show up at Braddell Heights Community Centre (Level 3, Classroom 11 (#03-11)) on any 2nd or 4th Saturday at 2:30pm. You will be warmly welcomed and can simply sit back and watch how a meeting runs.

How much does Toastmasters cost in Singapore?

Annual membership at BH II is SGD 280 — roughly $23 a month. This covers both Toastmasters International dues and your BH II club membership in full. There is no separate registration or joining fee. Attending as a guest is free.

Do I need experience to join?

None at all. Your first speech as a member is an ice-breaker — a short talk about yourself. It is deliberately low-stakes, designed to get you comfortable on your feet. Plenty of BH II members joined having never spoken in front of a group before.

How many times can I visit as a guest before joining?

As many times as you like. We would rather you see a few meetings and join when you are genuinely excited about it than rush into membership. Take your time.

Meetings

What happens at a Toastmasters meeting?

A typical BH II meeting runs 2:30pm to 5:15pm and has three main segments:

  • Prepared speeches — members deliver pre-planned talks (usually 5 to 7 minutes each)
  • Table Topics — impromptu speaking: participants get an unexpected question and have 1 to 2 minutes to respond on their feet
  • Evaluations — trained evaluators give structured, constructive feedback on each speaker

The meeting closes with Best Speaker, Best Table Topics, and Best Evaluator awards.

When and where does BH II meet?

Schedule: Every 2nd and 4th Saturday, 2:30pm to 5:15pm
Venue: Braddell Heights Community Centre, Level 3, Classroom 11 (#03-11)
Address: 1 Braddell Rise, Singapore 579716
MRT: Lorong Chuan (Circle Line, Exit C, ~8 min walk)
Parking: Free at BHCC on weekends

Will I be forced to speak as a guest?

No. Guests are sometimes invited to try Table Topics (the impromptu speaking segment) but it is always optional. Many guests prefer to just watch their first time, and that is completely fine.

Is Toastmasters right for me?

Is Toastmasters good for shy people or introverts?

Yes — many BH II members joined precisely because they were shy or struggled with stage fright. Toastmasters is a structured, supportive environment where you progress at your own pace. The feedback culture is constructive and encouraging. Over time, the regular practice builds genuine confidence, not just performance.

How is Toastmasters different from a public speaking course?

A course is a one-off event. Toastmasters is ongoing practice over months and years. You speak repeatedly, receive structured feedback each time, and take on progressively challenging roles. Skills develop through repetition — not a single workshop. The annual cost is also significantly lower than most public speaking courses or leadership workshops in Singapore.

How quickly will I improve?

Most members notice a real difference within a few months of regular attendance. The more meetings you attend and the more roles you take on, the faster you grow. Members who also volunteer for club leadership roles tend to progress fastest.

What is the Toastmasters Pathways programme?

Pathways is Toastmasters International's online learning platform with 11 specialised paths — from Presentation Mastery to Leadership Development to Innovative Planning. Members choose a path and complete projects at their own pace, earning recognised credentials. It replaces the old Competent Communicator and Competent Leader manuals.
